The very first Hawaiian Shirt Invitational (HSI) was
held from April 5 - April 7, 2002. The location was beautiful
Houston, TX. The home base was the home of JJ and Lacy in League
City, TX.April 4, 2002The festivities began when Sheebz was picked up to the airport. Nick called from the airport wondering where his ride was, then Lacy realized that she had his flight time wrong. After the 40 minute drive to the airport, we realized that we didn't know what airline he came in on. After some minor delays, Nick was found. That night the players - JJ, Nick, and Sheebz - discussed the next few days and drafted the official HSI rules. They planned to play four rounds of golf over the next three days. The winner would take home the Hawaiian Shirt Guy trophy, a gem that JJ found and painted. (Let the record show that Lacy's prediction was that Sheebz would be the winner.) After a few brews and cigars, the players made it to bed to rest for the next day.
April 5, 2002
The course was in good shape and provided a great starting course. A funny moment was when Nick hit his ninth shot out of a greenside bunker on a par 5. As JJ and Sheebz were on the green, the ball went flying over their heads and landed about 75 yards past the green. Nick picked up his ball and took a nine. At the end of the round Sheebz and JJ were tied with 10 points apiece, Nick had 6. The evening started at a seafood restaurant called Redfish. The group then proceeded to a local establishment called The Sandbar. After that it got blurry, and things got out of control. Some highlights were the Japanese dude playing the guitar with his tongue, midnight golf, and pile-o-Sheebz. April 6, 2002A.M.- The threesome rose early on Saturday morning to take the 45 minute drive to Galveston Island. The course was the Galveston Island Municipal Golf Course. Kevin and Shaggy, two of JJs friends, played along on this round. This course was just a few miles from the Gulf of Mexico and it was very WINDY.The playing conditions were almost impossible. The wind was killing iron shots. A few sprinkles fell on the back nine. The average score for the group was over 100. Sheebz gathered 7 extra points on the way to a total score of Sheebz - 29, Nick - 12, JJ - 11 through the first two rounds.
P.M. - The windy morning wore out the players. However, another round was scheduled for that evening. It was played on a fully lighted par 72 course and we played at night. The course was Beacon Lakes Golf Club in Dickinson, TX. The lights weren't exactly major league variety, so many times the ball would go above the lights and it was very tough to see. The average on this course for the three players was a week low 95, with the week's low round being shot by Sheebz, with an 86. Playing under the lights was different and a lot of fun. At the end of this round, the score was Sheebz - 38, JJ - 15, Nick - 14April 7, 2002A.M.
We managed to play through headaches, stomach problems, and other health ailments. Although Sheebz had first place wrapped up, the battle for second place was fierce. With 10 holes to play Nick and JJ were tied. The 14th hole was carried over into the 15th while Nick was behind JJ by 5 points. On that hole Nick hit a long rabbit putt for birdie to win the hole and collect 4 points. At the same time JJ failed to convert his wolf, so Nick and JJ were even again. They stepped to the 18th tee all tied up for the week. JJ converted a woof on the final hole to grab second place by one point. Final Score: Sheebz - 56, JJ - 22, Nick - 21. P.M.It was time to depart. Nick and JJ presented the trophy to Sheebz. Nick and Sheebz were escorted to the airport, and the First Hawaiian Shirt Invitational came to a close. We can't wait until next time
