This year we are playing in Myrtle Beach and staying at Legends Resort.

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Nick, Powell, and Sheebz all flew on the same flight and met JJ in Charleston, South Carolina.  We rented a mini-van, loaded up our clubs, and began the two hour drive to Myrtle Beach.  Last year at HSI VII Powell walked off and left his sand wedge on the 18th green when we were getting rained on, so we had to stop at a golf store so he could pick up a new one.  It's a good thing we filled up our cooler in Charleston, because this drive took a lot longer than we thought it would.

We arrived at the The Legends Resort and checked in.  We were staying in a two bedroom condo that was very similar to the accommodations at old Kinderhook.  JJ and Nick were roomies and Powell and Sheebz were in the other bedroom.  Legends Resort is a facility with three 18 hole courses, so most of our trip was going to be right there on the facility playing those courses.  We unloaded all of our things and decided to go get some food right away because we were all very hungry

It goes without saying that the Champions dinner is one of the greatest of all HSI traditions and it deserves a lot of planning and coordination.  Unfortunately, JJ didn't feel the same way.  We drove around Myrtle Beach for 30 minutes looking for somewhere to eat.  We first stopped at a placed call Melons, which was like a trashy Hooters.  Then we went to a bar called AJ's and almost had hot dogs and nachos.  However, JJ finally led us to Ultimate California Pizza where we had a decent Champions dinner.  After eating dinner, we hit a few balls on the range before heading back to the condo for a relaxing night on the eve of our first round in HSI VIII.

The Legends was a great place to stay.  We started every morning by having breakfast in the clubhouse restaurant.  Our first tee time was at 7:56 a.m. and was at the Parkland course.  This year we implemented partner scoring for the first three rounds and none of us were quite sure how that was going to work out.  The pairings were Nick/JJ vs Sheebz/Powell.  Nick and JJ won most of the skins on this round, but nobody played particularly well or badly.  All of the scores were in the 90's.  At the turn we ate some lunch in the clubhouse.

Our next round was at the Moorland course.  This course was listed in some publications as a very difficult course in the Myrtle Beach area.  Nick and Powell were taking on Sheebz and JJ.  The scoring was much more even this round, but Nick and Powell took a few more points than Sheebz and JJ.  We all really liked this course.  The layout was great.  After golf and getting cleaned up, we at dinner at the Alisa Pub.  The NBA playoffs were going on and we sat around a big screen TV and watched the game.  After dinner we headed back to the condo.

Friday, June 6, 2008

Today would be our only round away from The Legends Resort.  We drove about 20 minutes to play TPC Myrtle Beach.  It's always fun and interesting to play courses that are very well known.  We teed off at 9:08 a.m.  The final round of partner play matched Sheebz/Nick against JJ/Powell.  This round was the worst scoring round for the week.  The course played very tough and two rounds were posted over 100, the only two of the week.  When this round was completed we at lunch in the grill at the course.  This was the only round of the day so we made our way back to The Legends to get changed.

We decided to relax for the remainder of the day.  We got changed and headed down to the beach.  It was great.  The temperature that week was incredibly hot, but it seemed to be about ten degrees cooler on the beach.  We stayed at the beach for a couple of hours just swimming in the waves and relaxing on the beach.  Then we headed back to the condo and changed clothes to go out for dinner.  We had some wings and beers at Hooters before heading to drive go carts.  But the go carts were closed so we simply went out to a few bars before making our way back to the condo for a short night's rest.

Saturday, June 7, 2008

Our first round of golf today was at  7:24 a.m. on Legends Moorland.  We were out late the night before, so there was little chatter for most of the morning.  This was our first round of individual play so the players were focused.  When the morning round was complete, we had a quick lunch and started our second round Legends Heathland.  With that round complete, we got back to the condo and ordered a couple of Pizza's and just crashed.

A travel day.  We packed up, had the trophy presentation, and hit the road for the two hour trip to the airport.  JJ headed to Houston while Nick, JJ, and Sheebz departed for Kansas City.  Another successful HSI event.

We all agreed that HSI XIII was one of the most memorable and enjoyable of any HSI event.  Everything went very well.  The golf courses were great.  The location close to the ocean gave us something to do on our off day.  Even the night life was good.  Definitely an HSI that will give us more memorable moments than any other.

HSI IX

Our big winner, Nick, will be making plans for HSI IX.  Details aren't finalized, but he is considering doing something around spring break or in the Fall.  He will have to pull off some great planning to pull off an event that is as great as HSI VIII has been.
