We'll be visiting the Scottsdale, AZ area this year for HSI X .

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

JJ and Sheebz had arrived the day before.  They went and played a practice round at Camelback Golf Club - Padre Course.  It was a decent course, but nothing like the nice courses that they would be playing later that week.

Powell and Nick arrived at around 5 p.m.  They were picked up at the airport and the group went for the Champions Dinner at Grimaldi's Coal Brick-Oven Pizza.  After a few pizza's and some beers, we went to the rental home and played some outdoor billiards and Nick went for a swim in the outdoor pool.  Our house was called Casa Willow and was a nice house in Scottsdale.  That night was a chance for us to all catch up and get ready for our first round the next morning.  It was a late, but calm, night.

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Round one was held at The Sanctuary Golf Course.  This was a nice course, but nothing like the spectacular quality that we would be playing later in the week.  It was very windy this day and made the golf pretty difficult.  However, even with the windy conditions, the average for the group was a week low 89.  Sheebz led the way with an 84.

After the round we stayed and had lunch at the course before leaving and driving about twenty minutes to  Grayhawk Golf Club.  This is a fantastic complex with two courses.  It is notable because this was Phil Mickelson's home course when he lived in Phoenix.  The locker room was filled with pictures and memorabilia from Lefty.  The second round of HSI X would be held on The Talon Course, which had been rated the 5th best public course in all of Arizona according to golf.com.  We could tell from the clubhouse and the range that this was going to be a cool course.  We weren't let down.  It was an incredible place and we shot average golf.  Nick scored the best of the group, carding an 85.

When golf was over, we went back to the house because Sheebz was making dinner.  We had gone to the store the day earlier and purchased all of the ingredients for tacos.  While Sheebz was working on dinner, he had to cut an onion.  Through a combination of a few too many adult beverages and being in a hurry, he sliced into his left thumb pretty good.  It was not pretty.  It was a stupid thing to do.  Some gauze and tight tape was required the rest of the week.  For the remainder of the night, we stayed around the house and chilled out sitting in the hot tub and watching TV.

Friday, November 19, 2010

Today we had a single round scheduled at Troon North Golf Club - Pinnacle Course.  The two rounds we had scheduled at Troon were to be the highlight of the week.  The Pinnacle Course was rated the #1 public course in all of Arizona according to golf.com.  We weren't disappointed.  What was particularly memorable at these courses were the houses that were at the course.  They were incredible.  The course was great.  Powell was on fire today, shooting a group week best 83.  When the round was over, we stayed on the patio and had drinks.  The view was fantastic and the weather was great.  It was fun to just sit and chat.

When golf was over and we were done with drinks, we made our way back to the house.  We didn't have any firm plans, but we knew that we'd be going out to do something.  We had many beverages at the house - maybe a few too many.  It was probably a good thing when a huge unopened bottle of Jaeger Meister broke on the kitchen floor.  We ended up calling a cab to go to a casino.  On the way, we changed our mind and decided to just go to a bar.  However, JJ was adamant that we go to the casino.  Se we go to the casino around 9 p.m. and we left the casino around 3 a.m.  Sheebz and Powell hit the poker tables.  Sheebz had some luck, Powell did not.  After a cab ride home, Powell and Sheebz decided to challenge each others manhood when they got in the house.  It probably would have been a better idea to do this outside.  The all-in-fun scuffle ended up with the two of them tumbling into the wall and making a good sized hole.  It appeared that the group would not be receiving back 100% of their security deposit.  It was very late, so we all went to bed to get a couple hours of rest before the final round

Saturday, November 20, 2010

The 7:27 a.m. tee time at  Troon North Golf Club - Monument Course came WAY too early.  After getting three hours of sleep at the end of a long night, playing thirty-six holes was going to challenge everybody.  This was a great course, but we did not play great golf.  JJ led the way with a 92.

After the round we drove straight to Grayhawk Golf Club for our final round at the Raptor Course.  JJ again led the scoring with a 94.  By the end of this round, we were all exhausted.  We finished our last hole as the sun was setting and then we ate dinner outside at a restaurant that overlooked the 18th green.  It was a great way to finish HSI X.

We then left the course and went back to the house.  We arrived around 8 p.m. and I think everybody was asleep by 8:30.  We were all tired.

Sunday, November 21, 2010

After a long night of sleep and recovery from a long week, we got up and cleaned up the house and held the trophy presentation.  Although we all wanted to win, we were all happy that Powell was able to claim his first HSI trophy.  He definitely earned it.  We made our way to the airport and everybody went home.

HSI XI

We briefly talked about the plans for HSI XI.  A few of the options were Branson, MO, and the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama.  It will be up to Powell to plan HSI XI.  We can't wait.
